What to Do if You're Involved in an Accident

Tips to help improve your case

When you are in an accident, there are things you should do to help yourself survive and there are things you can do to help ensure the success of the personal injury lawsuit you'll file after the accident. The following tips from seasoned Wilkes-Barre personal injury lawyers can help.

Call for emergency medical help

If anyone involved in the accident is injured, call an ambulance immediately. It is a good idea to call even if injuries appear minor.

Call the police

Law enforcement will document the events of the accident. This is especially important if you think the other driver may be driving under the influence (DUI) or if they caused the accident.

Exchange information

Take down drivers license, insurance, registration and contact information from all drivers involved. If possible, get the names and contact information of any witnesses to the accident.

Photograph the scene

Do as much as you can to document the accident by taking pictures of all vehicles involved, the roadways, the weather conditions and the surrounding area. Printing the photos and making notes about how the accident happened in relation to the pictures can be very useful while you still have the events fresh in your memory.

Write it down

Taking notes of everything you remember can be very helpful. What you were doing just before the accident, what the other drivers on the road were doing, what time of day it was, what the weather and road conditions were, and anything else you can remember may prove useful to your case.

Witnesses

Take the names and numbers of any witnesses who may have seen what happened.

Call a lawyer

So many people think that they are being opportunistic by calling a lawyer after an accident. The fact is, the insurance company responsible for your accident is going to have a lawyer, or more likely a team of lawyers fighting to protect their interests. Unfortunately for you, “protecting their interests” means paying you as little as possible, regardless of the severity of your injuries.

An accident attorney with experience can help you get the compensation you deserve for your injuries and the funds you need to cover your medical expenses. The sooner you call, the better the case your attorney can build. While we understand that the circumstances of your accident and the extent of your injuries will greatly determine how many of these tips you will be able to follow, we recommend you do as much as possible. If you have been injured and are incapacitated, ask a family member or loved one to take pictures of the scene for you.
